Meet Pam – A True Inspiration at Milwaukee Rehab Hospital

Milwaukee Rehab

We were honored recently to sit down with Pam so she could share her incredible story of resilience and strength. Pam has been a vital part of the Milwaukee Rehab family since its inception, wearing many hats—from PT assistant to Case Management and IRF PAI. But here’s the twist: she’s not just an employee; she was also one of the very first patients! Talk about dedication!

Pam has faced significant health challenges throughout her journey, having undergone over 20 brain surgeries due to hydrocephalus. This journey has brought mobility issues and the need for shunts, not to mention a suprapubic catheter. More recently, Pam bravely fought ovarian cancer, yet this hasn’t deterred her from making a difference in the lives of others. Her spirit is nothing short of inspiring.

Despite the struggles she’s encountered—especially not being able to fully engage in her rewarding career as a physical therapist—Pam is a beacon of hope. She was so passionate about being part of Milwaukee Rehab Hospital that she volunteered to be one of the first patients, knowing she would benefit from the care herself. What really stands out about Pam is her boundless energy and spirit of teamwork. Whether it’s filling in for case management, assisting in physical therapy sessions, or providing patient advocacy, she’s there with a smile, sharing her experience with those who need support. She tells patients that while their journey may be tough, finding a new purpose is key, and she loves witnessing their progress.

Pam emphasized that she loves her job. Recently, Pam observed a touching moment when her teammate, Shamara, chose to sit beside a patient who was spending his birthday alone. Shamara shared her breakfast with him, creating a warm and supportive atmosphere. Pam expressed that this act of kindness perfectly highlights the compassion that thrives at Milwaukee Rehab Hospital, reinforcing why she feels such pride being part of this community.

Pam often shares her own small victories. She loves pasta, and she recalls the joy of being able to carry a pot of pasta without spilling it. She says, “Holy buckets! That was a huge milestone for me!” As someone who understands the challenges of physical disabilities, Pam encourages her patients to focus on their new goals. Recently, she became a Certified Fall Prevention Specialist, reinforcing her commitment to patient safety and empowerment. Pam’s insights don’t stop there! She discovered a specially coated catheter that makes self-cathing easier and significantly decreases urinary tract infections. Her initiative led her to seek approval for this innovative product and to get involved in the training process.

Pam is truly a warrior, and her story is a testament to the power of resilience and empathy.
